In very strange news, one of the most common names from your childhood could soon be extinct.

Yep, soon the name ‘Michael’ could be no longer. While the name topped the list of popular baby names every single year for 44 years prior to 2000, there have been dramatically fewer ‘Michaels’ in the world every year since.

For instance, in the US only 14,000 babies named Michael were born in 2016.

And things aren’t much better in Australia. While during the 1950s and 1990s Michael was in the top 10 list of most popular baby names, it hasn’t even made the top 50 in 2016. It has been gradually dropping over the last two decades.

Interestingly, the two years with the fewest amount of Michaels born are 1940, and now 2016.

It seems that it might not be trendy or unique enough for Millennial parents, so it will be interesting to see what the next generation of eclectic baby names brings!
