Mothers can be loving and caring and sometimes, they can be strict too. But they are always known to be the pillars of strength for their children. Here are five movies that depict mothers going out of their way to help children realise their dreams and aspirations.

Village Rockstars (2018)

This movie, which is India’s official foreign language film entry to the Oscars this year, revolves around a 10-year-old girl named Dhunu (played by Bhanita Das), who dreams of owning a guitar and having a music band of her own. She is supported by her mother (played by Basanti Das), who dares to question patriarchy, even as she finds herself getting caught up in regressive norms, helping her daughter fulfill her dream.

Nil Battey Sannata (2016)

This movie, starring Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker and Ria Shukla, shows how a mother challenges her daughter in academics to motivate her to excel. Swara plays the role of single mother and high-school dropout maid (Chanda), who enrolls in her daughter’s school to learn math. Chanda promises to drop out of school again if her daughter manages to score higher marks than her in the subject, which she eventually does. Overcoming challenges, the mother-daughter duo finally manage to finish school together.

Dukhtar (2014)

This is a Pakistani drama-thriller starring Samiya Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza, Saleha Aref, Asif Khan, Ajab Gul and Samina Ahmad. The movie revolves around a mother and her 10-year-old daughter, who leave home to save the girl from marriage to a tribal leader.

Mom (2017)

This thriller features Srivedi in the role of a mother (Devki) who sets out to avenge the rape of her stepdaughter (Arya, played by Sajal Ali) at a party by a group of boys. The movie marks Sridevi’s last major appearance before her demise in February, 2018.

Secret Superstar (2017)

A musical-drama, starring Zaira Wasim, Aamir Khan and Meher Vij in important roles, Secret Superstar shows how a mother goes out of her way to help her daughter live her dream of becoming a singer. For instance, the mother Najma (played by Meher) sells her jewellery to buy a laptop for her daughter (Insia) so that she can record her song and upload the video online. Later, Insia’s grandmother reveals how her mother had fought all odds to keep her daughter alive despite her father’s efforts to abort her.
