Hairstylist Mara Roszak Reveals the Secrets Behind Cara Delevingne's Coolest Looks

Forget everything you think you know about Cara Delevingne's ever-changing hairstyles. The finished results you've seen in red-carpet photos merely scratch the surface of the creativity that went into each incredible look; what went into them behind the scenes makes them all the more mind-blowing. The brilliant eye and talented hands behind so many of the model and actor's looks is Mara Roszak, who has worked with Delevingne for several years, through long and barely-there hair. She recently sat down with Allure to tell us not only some of the unexpected tricks she used to create some of her favorite hairstyles but also share some expert tips anyone can use for their own hair.

In 2015 and 2016, Delevingne was still sporting long, dark-blonde hair, which Roszak worked into loose braids and sculpted, retro styles. It was at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, however, that Delevingne showed up with what, from a distance, appeared to be simple, beachy waves — but a closer look revealed a flawless braid running along the left side of her hairline and down her part. "I took a braid from underneath, and I braided a long piece and then secured it with a little elastic. And then I took it up, wrapped it up, and used a little piece of wig tape to hold it in place, and I pulled it down the part," Roszak says, making us immediately realize we need more wig tape in our lives.

About a year later, Delevingne went platinum blonde, inspiring Roszak to give her a bob — but not a super-blunt one. "For her hair type, I don't want it to ever be too blunt. Because she has a really awesome natural wave and her hair is really thick, I essentially cut it to create hidden layers," she explains, giving great advice to anyone with dense, wavy hair who's tempted to make the cut. And Roszak also has a tip for those considering going platinum, too: "Bleaching your hair platinum, it's such a significant change. So when you go to see your stylist, consult them and ask them what would they say would be perfect platinum for your skin tone."

Yet another year later, Delevingne shaved her head for a movie role, "which made me think, OK, maybe I don't have a job anymore," Roszak recalls. "But not the case." She went to an art-supply store to buy stencils, acrylic paint, and sponges, which she used to create the look of a scalp tattoo visible through the fine, platinum stubble on Delevingne's head. And when Delevingne was still rocking a near-buzz cut at the Valerian premier in July 2017, Roszak improvised with a half-wig, which she toned with purple shampoo and finger-waved with Gorilla Snot gel.

That isn't the last time Roszak added a little faux hair to Delevingne's short style. Later that month, "I extended side burns with hair pieces, as well as the bangs," she explains, having topped off the pixie with what looks like a headband but was actually just a piece of black ribbon. "I pulled out black ribbon and just cut a piece and then secured it with a little bit of wig tape at the back of her head." (Have you placed an order for wig tape yet?)

Roszak takes us through several other dazzling styles in the video above, but regardless of your ability to recreate them, she wants you to take away at least one thing: "We've been told short hair is limited, that it's not feminine. There are endless possibilities with short hair. It's so feminine, and there's so much you can do. It's really just about having fun."
