Hair loss can undermine one’s self-esteem and it can be a challenge to search for the right cure. However, some studies recommend rosemary oil to encourage hair growth or to halt hair loss.
In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, rosemary oil vs minoxidil for the treatment of alopecia was further investigated.
“The present study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and compare its effects with minoxidil two percent,” noted the study.
It continued: “Patients with AGA were randomly assigned to rosemary oil or minoxidil two percent for a period of six months.
“No significant change was observed in the mean hair count at the three-month endpoint, neither in the rosemary nor in the minoxidil group.
“In contrast, both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at the six-month endpoint compared with the baseline and three-month endpoint.
“The frequency of scalp itching at the three-month and six-month trial points was significantly higher compared with baseline in both groups.
“Scalp itching, however, was more frequent in the minoxidil group at both assessed endpoints.”
The study found the findings of the present trial provided evidence with respect to the efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of alopecia.

Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that can cause hair loss.
Research has looked at the effect of aromatherapy using rosemary oil on people with the condition.
The finding suggest that 44 percent of participants improved their condition with the use of rosemary over seven months, compared to just 15 percent who received no treatment.
It is also possible that rosemary oil might enhance the effectiveness of conventional treatments.
Rosemary is a woody plant with fragrant, needle-like leaves and flowers.
It belongs to the mint family and is native to the Mediterranean region.
While rosemary oil is typically used in perfumes and foods due to its pleasant scent and unique flavour, its benefits also extend to medicine.
For decades, cultures around the word have used rosemary oil to treat inflammatory conditions ranging from arthritis to asthma to nerve inflammation.
And more recently, studies are demonstrating that rosemary oil may help slow, stop, or even reverse pattern hair loss.
How to use
The easiest way to use rosemary oil is to try a shampoo with a high concentration of rosemary oil, advised Medical News Today.
The health site added: “It is also possible to make rosemary shampoo at home.
“Simply add 10-12 drops of rosemary oil to a shampoo and wash the hair daily.
“In theory, applying rosemary oil to the scalp, and leaving it on for longer periods, could enhance its effects.
“To make a rosemary oil solution, people can try diluting a drop or two of rosemary oil in a carrier oil, then applying it to the scalp overnight.”
