Health Tip: Keep Your Home’s Air Quality Safer

— Indoor air may actually harbor more hazardous pollutants than outdoor air, the National Safety Council says.

These may include cigarette smoke, chemical odors, lead, mold, radon and pesticide residues, the agency says.

Here are its recommendations for how to keep your home’s air safer:

  • Test your home for radon.
  • Keep your car and home smoke-free.
  • Control moisture, and clean up any mold problems.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep your home clean.
  • Identify and get rid of any sources of lead.
  • Make sure your home is properly ventilated.
  • Change furnace filters regularly and keep air ducts clean.
  • Keep houseplants to help purify the air.
