High blood pressure – the 30p fruit you should eat for breakfast every day
High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK. The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs. You could be at risk of high blood pressure if you eat an unhealthy diet, or if you don’t do enough exercise. But regularly eating kiwi fruit could help to prevent deadly hypertension symptoms, it’s been claimed.

A daily dose of kiwi may be beneficial for people with high blood pressure, according to medical website Medical News Today.
The fruit contains bioactive substances that work to lower blood pressure, it said.
Eating just three kiwis in a single day is all that’s needed to reduce your risk of hypertension.
“Research has shown that certain foods can lower blood pressure, both right away and in the long term,” it said.
“Medications, dietary changes, and other lifestyle modifications can reduce high blood pressure while lowering the risk of associated conditions.
“A daily serving of kiwi can reduce blood pressure in people with mildly elevated levels, according to results of one study [from Oslo University Hospital].
“They found that eating three kiwis a day for eight weeks resulted in a more significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, compared with eating one apple a day for the same period.
“Kiwis are also rich in vitamin C, which may significantly improve blood pressure readings in people who consumed around 500 mg of the vitamin every day for about eight weeks.”
You could also lower your risk of high blood pressure by regularly eating watermelon, it added.
Watermelon contains an amino acid – citrulline – that helps the body to produce nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide is a gas the relaxes blood vessels, and encourages flexibility in arteries; both of which lower blood pressure.

Natural ways to lower blood pressure
High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.
The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.
It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
You can check your blood pressure by visiting your local doctors’ surgery or pharmacy.
Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart attacks and strokes.
