How to sleep: A supplement which increases production at night to help you sleep better
Sleep is not an easy process for many and with one of the most tumultuous years experienced ever, sleep can be almost impossible for some. According to numerous studies and research, taking melatonin supplements can help not only for you to fall asleep faster but also for a better quality of sleep. How?
A key factor in how us humans sleep is the exposure of light and darkness being correctly regulated.
Exposure to light stimulates a nerve pathway from the retina in the eye to an area in the brain called the hypothalamus.
This then signals to other parts of the brain that controls hormones, body temperature and other functions that play a role in making a person feel sleepy or wide awake.
Taking a certain supplement aids in these functions working better and as such helps a person sleep better.
Melatonin is a natural hormone which is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and then released into the bloodstream.
When there is darkness, the pineal gland starts producing melatonin while light causes that production to stop.
As a result, melatonin helps regulate circadian rhythm and synchronize our sleep-wake cycle with night and day.
When this takes place a natural transition into sleep occurs and a consistent and good quality of sleep takes place.

It is well-established that melatonin produced by the body plays a fundamental role in getting quality sleep, so it’s natural to consider whether melatonin supplements can be used to address sleeping difficulties, said the Sleep Foundation.
The health site continued: “Melatonin, often referred to as the sleep hormone, is a central part of the body’s sleep-wake cycle.
“Its production increases with evening darkness, promoting healthy sleep and helping to orient our circadian rhythm.
“The body naturally produces melatonin, but researchers and the public have increasingly taken an interest in external sources of it, such as liquids or capsules, as a way to address sleep difficulties.”
In a study published in the National Centre for Complimentary and Integrative Health, melatonin and its use in a good night’s rest was investigated.
The study noted: “Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness.
“It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep.
“Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production.
“Research suggests that melatonin plays other important roles in the body beyond sleep. However, these effects are not fully understood.”
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep–wake cycle.
Numerous evidence suggests that taking melatonin supplements is a simple and effective ways to fall asleep faster.
In one study, two mg of melatonin before bed improved sleep quality and energy the next day and helped people fall asleep faster.
In another study, half of the group fell asleep faster and had a 15 percent improvement in sleep quality.
