During the flu season or times of illness, people often seek special foods or vitamin supplements that are believed to boost immunity. Nutritionist Nicci Clark spoke exclusively with Express.co.uk to discuss the best ways to help boost your immunity this winter.

Nicci began: “A healthy, balanced diet is incredibly important for supporting your body’s natural defence system. 

“You need sufficient energy and nutrients for the immune system to function and a poor diet can compromise your ability to ward off infection. 

“For the sake of your immune health, adding vitamin dense foods to your diet can help keep pesky bugs at bay.”

Nicci Clark’s top three immunity boosting foods to strengthen your immune system include:

Kale 

Hailed as a superfood, kale is loaded with vitamins A, C and K, and is one of the best nutrient-dense foods on the planet.

Spinach 

Not only is spinach rich in vitamin C but it’s also packed with antioxidants which increase the infection-fighting ability of our immune systems. 

Turmeric 

When the body is chronically inflamed, the immune system is supressed, and this can make you more susceptible to illness and infection.  

Turmeric’s most active compound is curcumin, it’s a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant known for its wonderful medicinal benefits. 

Kale is high in antioxidants, such as vitamin C, which may help fight oxidative damage to the body. Oxidative damage plays a role in many illnesses.

Spinach contains relatively high quantities of protein compared with other vegetables, though it is slightly lower in protein than kale. It also offers beneficial fibre, but at about half the level of kale. 

The medicinal properties in turmeric have also been shown to boost the immune system and protect the body from illnesses.
