Research shows Covid immunity can wane after six months, but the booster propels protection from infection with symptoms back up to around 90 percent.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “There is not a second to waste in getting your booster jab – and it is fantastic to see more than 13 million people have now come forward to top up their protection this winter.”

Actress Joanna Lumley said she was happy she was getting her booster today.

The 75-year-old star said: “I shall just go on being a pin cushion until they say it’s time to stop. Anything you can do, terrific.”

NHS boss Amanda Pritchard said last week a record 2.1 million boosters were delivered in England, while there could be “further expansions” on jab eligibility.

There were 892 deaths linked to Covid in the week to November 5, up from 777 the previous week – the highest since March.

A further 37,243 cases and 214 deaths were reported in the daily statistics.
