A vaccine for malaria has been approved by the World Health Organisation in what is potentially a landmark breakthrough in the fight against the disease. The vaccine is called Mostquirix and has been developed by British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), in 2019 there were 229 million cases of malaria worldwide. The estimated number of deaths in the same year was 409,000, and children under the age of five are the most vulnerable group.
Malaria is transmitted by parasites transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes
But what are the five most common symptoms of malaria?
The NHS lists these as the most common symptoms of malaria:
- a high temperature of 38C or above
- feeling hot and shivery
- headaches
- vomiting and/or diarrhoea
- muscle pains
