Sarah Hyland's Workout Hack Is Super Weird But Also Pretty Genius
If you’re anything like us, looking at your sweaty mug in the mirror is probs the last thing you feel like doing mid-workout (much redness, very drowned-rat chic). But as far as Sarah Hyland is concerned, it’s totally worth doing – for the good of the gains, of course.
Earlier this week, the 27-year-old admitted she likes to hit the gym in her birthday suit and park herself in full view of her reflection (coz, extra motivation.)
Via Instagram stories, she asked her fans: “So I have a break from filming right now before some other things, and does anybody else, like, workout out naked in front of mirrors so you hate yourself and work harder?”
Then a few mins later she shared a follow-up vid explaining exactly why it works for her:
“Seriously,” she said. “I suggest you all do it because you’re in front of the mirror and you’re like, ‘Must have Dua Lipa abs!”
Here’s the thing, she’s not crazy. In fact, in one study out of the University of California, says this method is totally legit.
Researchers found that participants who took regular selfies and exposed themselves to either their reflection or photos of themselves over a four-week period experienced significant mood improvements and increased confidence. And great new for the Insta-phobic among us (raises hand), they didn’t have to share the snaps to reap the benefits – just looking at them provided the participants with a sneaky self-love boost.
So, the next time you find yourself hitting a fitness plateau (or struggling with body image,) try opening up your front-facing cam or heading to the nearest mirror.
Thanks for the tip, Sar.
