These Trainer-Approved HIIT Workout Accessories Will Get Those Endorphins Going
Having the right accessories can make or break any workout, but when it comes to a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout, it rings true even more. The reason? In this type of workout, you’re going to most likely be switching out equipment or moves fast since you’re doing short intervals, which means you’ll be using more accessories in general. So, if you’re not equipped with quality weights that are right for you, an accurate heart monitor that won’t get in the way and proper sneakers that will help you jump, hop and stabilize you while lifting weights, then you might not last through your workout.
We recently tapped Alissa Tucker, Master Trainer at AKT in New York City, to reveal her must-have HIIT workout accessories that get her through a high-energy dance workout (and the one recovery tool she swears by). AKT is dance-based cardio fitness and offers interval and circuit training as well. If there’s anyone who knows a thing or two about what you do — and don’t — need during one of the fastest workout you can do, it’s someone who basically eats, sleeps, and breathes it. But if you’re a beginner, never fear. HIIT workouts are for anyone — just take things at your own pace because no one knows your body better than you, so listen to it! Below, Tucker took us through her can’t-live-without HIIT workout accessories, from the ultimate pair of portable weights (you’ve seriously never seen more cult-worthy ones than these) and the most supportive sneakers to ouch-free hair ties. Get ready to take your fitness routine (and recovery) to the next level! Now, let’s get physical.
Bala Bangles
80’s style ankle and arm weights just got a serious makeover. These chic weights are portable and come in swoon-worthy colors that are just irresistable. Tucker wears them on her wrists during cardio to bring more awareness to the upper body and to add a little extra weight.
Invisibobble Hair Ring
When you’re doing a HIIT workout, the last thing you need is your ponytail holder breaking on you in the middle of a burpee. When you’re done breaking a sweat, you also don’t want the elastic to rip your hair out. Tucker says she used to wear two to three hair ties to keep her hair in place during a high intensity workout. “With Invisibobbles I only need one and I don’t have to worry about my hair at all during my workout.”
Nike Free Metcon 2 Training Shoe
Tucker’s shoe-of-the moment is these supportive Nike traning shoes, which she says gets her through intense cardio dance workouts at AKT. “I like a nice amount of support and cushion while still being able to feel the floor, and that’s exactly what these offer. They also have an extra strap that wraps around your foot for extra support in lateral movements.”
Vooray Trainer Duffel Bag
Just like the name suggests, this bag is fit for a trainer, so you know it must be good. Unlike your standard gym bag, this one boasts a playful print that will encourage you to get those endorphins going. Tucker loves this bag’s ventilated shoe compartment and the wet clothes pocket so you can keep fresh clothes clean.
Accuro Heart Rate Monitor
“Our HIIT workouts are very challenging so the heart rate monitor can give a little extra motivation to push yourself when it gets tough,” Tucker says. This chest-strap version features Bluetooth 4.0 technology so you can track workouts wherever you go. With the Accuro app, you can view all your data easily. Plus, chest strap monitors are more accurate than wrist ones because of its proximity to the heart.
Bose Soundsport Free Wireless Earbuds
Airpods might fall out during jumping jacks and burpees, and bulky headphones just aren’t practical for a HIIT workout. “The sound quality is amazing, they’re water resistant, and most importantly, they stay in place even during the most high intensity, sweaty workouts,” says Tucker.
Hyperice Vyper 2.0 Vibrating Fitness Roller
Most of us probably wouldn’t know what to do without a foam roller to get out those kinks and soothe tight muscles, but this vibrating version is taking recovery to the next level. HIIT workouts are great, but create (good) stress to your body. “If you want to get the most out of your time in the gym, you need to make sure you are properly recovering between workouts,” Tucker says. It’s like a mini massage you can give yourself daily!
Saje Peaceful Warrior Deodorant
One of the most imporant accessories you might not think about during a workout is what you put on before — deodorant. Tucker says this one from Saje is a winner because it also doesn’t stain your clothes (bye, bye armpit stains!). “It’s a two step process.” she says. “First you spray the essential oil for scent. I love Peaceful Warrior but there are other scents to choose from. Then you rub the mineral salt stick, Au Natural, over top.”
