WSL Young-Gun Macy Callaghan Is Here To Win
Currently ranked 9th on the Championship Tour – which is set to kick off in Newcastle NSW on April 1st – Macy Callaghan is on the road to smashing goals when it comes to surfing.
Growing up on the New South Wales Central Coast beach of Avoca, she won her first event as a 10-year-old riding her dad’s board, got hooked on competition, ditched all the other sports she was playing and dedicated herself to surfing.
To find out more about what she has in the pipeline (pun intended), we spoke to Callaghan about her unique road to this year’s CT, her motivation going into it and how she plans to set herself apart from the rest of the competition.
Tell us about your road to this year’s CT?
The road to this year’s CT has been such a different route to any other year with Its multiple speed bumps. It’s been great having time at home to organise and get ready for the upcoming Aus leg which is looking to go to some unreal locations.
How have you been prepping?
Preparing for the upcoming leg of the CT for me has been much of the same. Super lucky that it’s coming to Aus and the events are not too far from my doorstep. We have had it really good in Aus lately regarding traveling. Being able to drive up and down the coast looking for waves has kept things feeling nice and fresh in my preparation.
What does your training look like pre Comp compared to off season?
I generally keep things much the same in my training. I like to tinker and change things up every now and again with weights, although mostly stick to body weight and keeping the body loose with movement related exercises. I also find surfing a lot helps haha.
What about your diet?
Breakfast isn’t a huge part of my day. I generally am up and at it with a coffee to start while checking the surf. Lunch would be my first major meal of the day. Lately it has ranged anywhere from a fresh sandwich and juice to Japanese and it’s many delicacies. Dinner is my favourite. My go to is fresh fish and salad from Red Hot Cod in Burleigh!
How do you stay mentally prepared?
For me, staying mentally prepared starts with surrounding myself with the right people that keep things happy and fun, then everything else falls into place after that.
How do you plan to set yourself apart?
You’ll see…

What’s your must have gear when it comes to competing?
For a day competing at the beach, it all starts with equipment. My check list ranges from everything I will need pre, during and post heat. I’m super lucky to have some great sponsors who help me out with gear. Having companies supporting my career that I enjoy being involved with, like Billabong, has always been a dream of mine. It’s also been so cool to see Oakley, another sponsor of mine, partnering with the World Surf League as the official eyewear and PPE partners and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them in the surf industry.
What are your goals for the future?
My goal right now is to win!
Who, if any, are the women you look up to?
My mum Is my number one supporter and inspiration.
