Pink Says "Fuck the Parenting Police"
We’re now into the thick of summer, and with all the unstructured time kids are spending outdoors there’s no shortage of opportunities for folks to judge other people’s parenting. From sunscreen to snack choices to safety, anyone looking for an opening to be critical will surely find one, and pop icon Pink, for one, is having none of it.
In an Instagram post on Monday, the artist shared an iconic summer image: two kids gleefully running through a sprinkler against a verdant outdoor backdrop. Deftly silencing her critics before they even had a chance to get a word in, Pink wrote, “Here’s a picture of my child running through water. It wasn’t even filtered. What a waste of water. And no helmet? I hope she had sunscreen.”
Pink also turned off commenting on the post, likely in order to avoid the sort of attention she got in April, when she posted a vacation pic of her son sans swim diaper and trolls jumped at the opportunity to comment on his genitalia. She scolded them at the time, adding sarcastically, “Here’s a picture of the pelican we obviously caught and abused for hours before dangling baby penis in its face.”
She’s hasn’t posted many images of her kids on social media since. But while you can’t make out her daughter Willow’s face in the sprinkler photo, Pink uses her signature wit to make her anti-shaming message loud and clear: “If she slips and falls she may be traumatized for life. And her mother wasn’t even there. I was….. gasp…. working!!!! In another country!”
If you can find fault even in such a sweet, simple, image, the star seems to be saying, maybe the problem isn’t her parenting — maybe it’s you.
