Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when a lack of vitamin B12 or folate affects the body’s ability to produce fully functioning red blood cells.

A condition known as pernicious anaemia is the most common cause in the UK, but some people can develop vitamin B12 deficiency as a result of not getting enough vitamin B12 from their diet.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a variety of symptoms. But according to an article published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), in many people, neurological symptoms are the main presenting symptoms.

It says neurological symptoms occur in 85 percent of vitamin B12 deficiency cases, and eight symptoms fall under this.
