Lady Gaga health: ‘Chronic pain is no joke’ Singer discusses fibromyalgia condition

Fibromyalgia: Diagnosis, causes and treatments

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, 34, known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, dancer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and cultural icon. The star has taken the world by storm since her debut single, ‘Just dance’ and has shown no signs of slowing down. Not an easy feat for a person suffering from a debilitating condition known as fibromyalgia. What is it and what are the symptoms to spot?

Lady Gaga opened up about her struggle with the condition in a 2018 issue of Vogue.

The singer discussed how fibromyalgia affects her life causing intense pain throughout her body due to the effects it has on the nervous system.

“I get so irritated with people who don’t believe fibromyalgia is real,” the singer said.

“For me, and I think for many others, it’s really a cyclone of anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, and panic disorder, all of which sends the nervous system into overdrive, and then you have nerve pain as a result.

“People need to be more compassionate. Chronic pain is no joke. And it’s every day waking up not knowing how you’re going to feel.”

Fibromyalgia is a condition which still baffles healthcare professionals.

Its symptoms mimic those of other conditions, and there aren’t any real tests to confirm the diagnosis.

As a result, fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed.

In the past, some healthcare providers even questioned whether fibromyalgia was real.

Today, it is far better understood with some of the stigma that used to surround it being eased.

Fibromyalgia causes what’s now referred to as regions of pain, said Healthline.

The site added: “Some of these regions overlap with what was previously referred to as areas of tenderness called “trigger points” or “tender points.”

“However, some of these previously noted areas of tenderness have been excluded.

“The pain in these regions feels like a consistent dull ache.”

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Fatigue
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sleeping for long periods of time without feeling rested (nonrestorative sleep)
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Trouble focusing or paying attention
  • Pain or a dull ache in the lower belly
  • Dry eyes
  • Bladder problems, such as interstitial cystitis.

For Lady Gaga, the pain suffered from fibromyalgia became so bad that she had to cancel her European leg of her tour due to the ongoing complications.

“A person gets widespread pain on both sides of the body and can get quite intense,” said Dr Chris on This Morning.

He continued: “It’s an awful condition as there are no specific tests for it.”

“I wish to help raise awareness & connect people who have it,” Lady Gaga tweeted.
