This performance tracker could reveal how well your hospital is doing
How is your hospital coping this winter? Interactive performance tracker breaks down your local unit’s A&E, operations and bed occupancy statistics
- The NHS Performance Tracker pulls together recent hospital data for England
- It gives a summary of figures for hospital trusts to indicate their performance
- Measures include patient safety incidents and cancelled operations
England’s worst performing hospital trusts have been named and shamed in an interactive tool.
Using only the name of a town or a postcode, the NHS Performance Tracker can reveal if hospitals are meeting health service targets.
A&E waits, patient safety incidents, the proportion of full beds and cancer waiting times are all measures included.
The handy tracker is regularly updated with the latest NHS figures, released every week during the winter by officials.

Blackwater Law, which produced the tool, also links back to a trust’s latest Care Quality Inspection report to reveal inspectors’ view of it.
It found Nottingham University Hospitals was the worst performing trust in terms of seeing its A&E patients on time in December.
Just 63 per cent of people in the emergency department were seen within four hours of arriving, according to the data.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust cancelled the most critical operations in November, with 25.
While Northern Devon Healthcare kept the most patients – 24 per cent – waiting for six weeks or more for a diagnostic test in the same month.
‘Previously, the only way to collate such a range of performance data would be to… download dozens of large and confusing spreadsheets and try and make sense of them,’ said Jason Brady, a partner at the firm.
‘Many trusts appear to be underperforming and the NHS Performance Tracker shows key performance data for every NHS trust in England, in one place, giving people a clearer indication of how their local trust is performing.’

When people put in their postcode, the name of the place they live, or the name of their local hospital trust they are faced with figures for various categories.
These include:
- The number of patient safety incidents
- Percentage of A&E attendances dealt with in four hours
- Percentage treated for cancer within 62 days of urgent GP referral
- Percentage of total beds occupied overnight
- Number of cancelled critical operations
- Number of cancelled elective operations
- Percentage of patients followed up within seven days of mental health discharge

Alongside each measure for an individual hospital there is an explanation of what each means and a comparison with the NHS targets.
And there is also information about Never Events – serious errors which are recorded nationally because they should never happen – which have happened at the trust.
Some parts of the tracker produce results which are not comparable – for example, it gives an A&E score for mental health trusts, which don’t have A&E departments.
And the data is only given as a monthly snapshot for certain measures, rather than as a longer time series.
‘The performance tracker does not indicate in and of itself that patients of a particular trust are receiving poor care or worse care than that provided at another trust,’ Mr Brady added.
‘But [it shows] where trusts appear to be under-performing which can and may impact patient care in some instances.’
