Dermatologists Slam Sunburn Tattoo Trend As 'Dangerous And Irresponsible'

As Australians, we’ve all been told there is no such thing as a safe tan.

But with summer arriving in other parts of the world, it seems not everyone has received the memo – with “sunburn tattoos” the latest fad to go viral.

The process involves individuals applying a shape or design using sunscreen or a stencil, before going out into the sun and burning themselves.

The design will then appear on the skin as a white patch.

Dermatologists are labelling the trend as being incredibly irresponsible, as not only are you at risk of sunstroke, but laying in the sun also increases your risk of skin cancer.

“Getting sunburn just once every two years is enough to triple your chances of developing melanoma in the future,” a dermatologist told Metro.

“It is therefore not only dangerous, but highly irresponsible for anyone to be promoting sunburn tattoos as a fashion trend.”

The Cancer Council of Australia recommends sun protection for whenever the UV index reaches three or higher – which usually happens daily from September to April in the southern states, and all year round further north.
