How Ricki-Lee Shutdown Body Shamers

Scroll Instagram for fitspiration? Chances are singer Ricki-Lee Coulter is at the top of your daily feed. The 31-year-old knows a thing or two about clocking up the cardio hours and keeping a positive outlook about it all, even in the face of negativity. We sat down with the 31-year-old songstress to find out exactly how she gets her head in the game – while maintaining a knockout body.

You spend your days performing and being photographed. How do you keep up your body confidence?

“At the moment I’m spending so much time in a recording studio, so being active is so important for my mind and my creativity. It’s so easy just to sleep in and skip a workout because you can’t be bothered, but I truly find that after I exercise my mind is super sharp. So, I workout every day – it really kick starts my mind into overdrive… and everybody knows that high you get after a good sweat. The added bonus is, it keeps you in shape! Even on a day off the gym I still like to get outside and go for a nice long walk with my husband – it’s just nice to get out of the house and get some fresh air in your lungs.”

What are the top beauty products you always take on the road with you?

“Being on the road, travelling and performing can be a real stress on your hair and your skin – so the products I take with me are all about maintaining strong and healthy hair and glowing skin! When I am doing a lot of shows and shoots – my hair is being tortured with constant colouring and styling. So to keep it strong and healthy, I use Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & 3 Minute Moisture Renewal Deep Conditioner every day. My skin can take a battering too from wearing make up all day, then at night performing and sweating on stage in heavy foundation. So, make up wipes are essential – I have dry skin, so a hydrating cleansing wipe like the Johnson’s Nourishing Facial Cleansing Wipes for Dry Skin are a must. Every morning I moisturise my face with Crème De La Mer Moisturising Cream – which I could not live without! And at night before bed I give my face a good cleanse using Cosmedix Purity Clean, then apply the Cosmedix Define Treatment which is a great anti ageing cream, followed by the Cosmedix Rescue Hydrating Balm.”

How do you mentally prepare for getting on stage?

“Preparation is the most important thing to get on stage and give a great performance! As long as I have rehearsed the songs with my band and I’ve rehearsed the choreography with my dancers, there really aren’t many surprises on stage. Fitness is really important too. I always get a bit of nervous energy before I perform, but it’s really just adrenaline and excitement to get out there – and once I hit the stage the nerves disappear. I warm-up my voice for 20 minutes before I perform, then I like to have a glass (or two) of champagne with my band and dancers before we hit the stage – and right before I go on, I like to have 5 minutes to myself to centre and focus.”

What is the number one piece of advice you’d give to younger girls with their eye on a music career?

“Lots of people have the idea that the life of an artist is all glitz and glamour and fame and fans and money and success. But the reality can be very different, so don’t expect it to be easy – because nothing happens overnight and there are always going to be ups and downs. So if it’s what you love doing – then work hard day in day out, focus on what you want, and do everything in your power every single day to make it happen. And always be true to yourself.”
