"Red Velvet" Is the Indulgent New Hair-Color Trend for Fall

Tired of all those hair-color trends named after food yet? I can totally understand if your head is spinning from month after month of chili chocolate, toasted coconut, watermelon pink and more. But try to leave room for at least one more especially sweet color that's seeing a surge on Instagram: red velvet.

Cooler in tone than "flannel hair" but not as purple as "mulled wine," red velvet hair closely resembles the vibrant shade of blood red found inside the cake it's named after. By no means the kind of auburn that could naturally grow out of someone's head, it's bold enough to command attention but doesn't have the same mythical vibe as other vivids. (Though it totally resembles a certain cartoon mermaid's hair color, doesn't it?)

"Anyone who would want this color could simply ask their colorist for a vibrant yet rich red," says Krys Wimer, a stylist in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. She says the red velvet shade has been KMH Salon's signature red ever since her mother mixed up their "secret" formula several years ago. However, Wimer is more than happy to reveal that she relies on Matrix SoColor SoRed to achieve the almost-burgundy look.

As for getting the brightest and longest-lasting color, "With reds, once your hair is lighter than a level six or seven, the reds tend to be more hollow. Staying within these levels where orange tones live naturally in the hair helps ensure vibrancy, richness, and longevity," Wimer explains. That also helps make it look super-flattering on virtually everyone. "A level-six red is also universal. It looks great whether you're fair- or olive- or dark-skinned."

Wimer isn't the only one using the hashtag #redvelvethair recently. Check out a few more Instagrammers showing off their takes on this especially indulgent shade to get all the inspiration you need for your next trip to the salon.
